Mattie Gordon’s ordinary life is turned upside down when bounty hunter Cyrus Braydon arrives on her doorstep showing a wanted poster for her son. WANTED Will Gordon, Dead or Alive. Consumed with finding her son and making sure his soul is ready to meet eternity, Mattie embarks on a desperate race to reach Will before the bounty hunter finds him.
When Mattie discovers someone following her, she reluctantly forms an alliance with Cyrus in order to save herself and Will. She soon discovers her own inadequacies and faces hard realities. The son she thought to be good isn’t, and the bounty hunter she judged as evil is perhaps not so after all.
Now she must save Cyrus from Will’s venomous grasp. If she succeeds in helping Cyrus escape, will her son ever listen to her about Jesus’ forgiveness? If only she can muster enough faith to trust God for one more miracle. But which one?

The Plight of Mattie Gordon edition by Jeanne Marie Leach Religion Spirituality eBooks

Mattie fully believes that her son Will is a respectable cattle hand, until bounty hunter Cyrus comes looking for him; as doubts about Will sink in, she's increasingly determined to make her best effort to get to him in time to tell him more about Jesus.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 3.5 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits. Plot points in sub-plots are dropped or not resolved. Setting (including timeline) is somewhat unclear or inconsistent. So much back and forth travel, and missed communications, or lack of explanation (Cyrus really should've explained himself better when he visited injured Mattie), it starts to feel repetitive after a while. No follow up on what happens specifically to Bob or Conrad, even though time was spent on them making them more sympathetic characters than Will.

Characters: 3.5 -- Main characters are relatable, realistic, interesting, and/or dynamic. Minor characters and villains are mainly stereotyped or simplified. Mattie largely maintains her faith in God, and even as she lets her opinions of Will and Cyrus, and her perspective on her previous secluded life, change, she focuses on leading the ones she cares for to Christ. Cyrus shifts his focus from bounty hunting to caring for Mattie fairly quickly, and that only solidifies once he knows Jesus. I liked seeing him start to pray and read his Bible. Bob was an interesting character, who drops out of the narrative part way through. We don't really see the caring son part of Will, until his conversion at the end, which makes it harder to see how Mattie was so unaware of his misdeeds.

Writing and Mechanics: 3 -- Scattered typos, punctuation issues, and word errors, including a few major mistakes. Generally solid use of alternating POV, with a few errors (which may have been more formatting issues than otherwise--seemed like there was some trouble making section breaks). Average writing, with strong parts and parts that seriously struggle.

Redeeming Value: 4.5 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Mattie's determined to show love to her son, and share the Gospel with him, regardless of his faults and right up to the end. Both Mattie and Cyrus do a good job of praying for direction and heeding God's promptings. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified. Will and his gang definitely break moral as well as legal laws, but there's a clear indication of the wrongness of it, even while Mattie continues to show godly love. Some violence, including the big shootout/capture of the gang that we hear about, which ended in deaths and injuries.

Personal Enjoyment: 3 -- I liked it. It was enjoyable and entertaining. I wouldn’t mind re-reading it someday, but it’s not a priority.

The Plight of Mattie Gordon edition by Jeanne Marie Leach Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I connected to Mattie Gordon's character right away being a mother myself. She just wanted what was best for her son. As a result, love blinded her to his mischievous behavior and Mattie found herself an accomplice to a gang of outlaws. Truth was peeled away in layers, giving the reader an opportunity to learn and grow along right along with her.

Leach did a wonderful job building her story world. The pacing and the discomforts of living during this time period brought an authenticity to the page. I especially liked the way her characters operated in it. I found myself rooting for Mattie Gordon all the way through. Cyrus made an endearing love interest and I was kept guessing around every bend. The ending was poignant and satisfying.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking to get lost in a touching romance. I am grateful to have taken this journey with Mattie. I'm richer because of it.
. Enjoyable read, not too long and short. I read the book till I finished because the author kept me wondering, what next?
I thought I had gotten my fill of western romances, but I gave this one a try. I love the plot and the twists throughout the book. I read it all in one day. I would recommend it highly.
Reading this book from the start left me wondering because some of the tenses were off. This happens to new writer's some times. But by the 2nd chapter I was hooked ! Great western with action and mystery ! Enjoyable with great faith to back it up. 🎉
Mattie Gordon, mother of a notorious cattle thief, struggles with unbelief. Her son is not who she thought he was. She is not who she thought she was--a content widow caring for her son and his "friends." She becomes confused when the bounty hunter who is searching for her son is not the bad guy she thinks he is. As the story progresses, Mattie wonders if God has abandoned her. However, she pushes through her doubt and learns that God always hears her prayers. This is a sweet historical western romance that reads quickly and satisfies the reader's need for charm and triumph.
I found this book to be a very good read. I decided to read it because I know the author, but that flew out the window when I started reading it. The story jumps off the page in the first paragraph—at the point of a gun. It cranks up by introducing some very well textured characters and a story that grips your attention and your heart. There are enough twists and turns to keep you up at night. That happened to me several nights in a row. I highly recommend this fascinating book.
A Christian Western romance with plenty of dramatic action, this is a short and easy read. The main character, Mattie Gordon, is spunky and likeable--and a bit unusual in anything classified as "romance"--she's 46 years old. I appreciate how the author takes us off the beaten path a bit, so to speak.

The pace is fairly fast but well-crafted. For those of you who prefer a more detailed, "scenic route" through a plot, consider Lawana Blackwell or Julie Klassen (both Christian historical romance writers).

Two things prevent a five star review--first, a need for some editorial polishing. Second, the "Christian" content. Everything is woven into the story appropriately, but it sounds like something from a modern tract--not the way someone in the 19th century would have presented the gospel. And there is no Scripture. When Mattie presents the gospel, it sounds thin and repetitive.

However, the end wraps up nicely and biblically. Very satisfying.
